GOV. RILEY PRESENTS SPIRIT OF ALABAMA AWARD TO OUTSTANDING ALABAMIANS
Montgomery
- Gov. Bob Riley today presented the Spirit of Alabama award in a
ceremony held in the historic Old House Chamber of the State Capitol.
On hand to receive awards were civil rights activist Johnnie Carr,
author of We Were Soldiers Lieutenant General Harold G. Moore, members
of the musical group “Alabama,” American Idol winner Ruben
Studdard, and the family of fallen CIA agent Johnny “Mike”
Spann.
“I am privileged to honor these Alabamians who have achieved
such greatness.” Gov. Riley said. “These recipients exemplify
what we all strive to be and continue to prove that Alabama’s
citizens are having an impact in making this a better world.”
The Spirit of Alabama medal, which was created shortly after Riley
took office, is presented to Alabamians who have exhibited the morals,
values and dedication that reflect the greatness of Alabama and are
renowned throughout the nation and the world. This year’s recipients
have influenced our society through music, changed the nation in the
struggle for civil rights, and defended the very freedoms that make
America the greatest nation on the face of the earth.
Governor Riley said the four members of Alabama - Randy Owen, Teddy
Gentry, Jeff Cook and Mark Herndon – “Have personified
all that is right about Alabama and shared their talents with the
world”. Riley added Alabama has “stayed true to their
roots”, raising their families in Alabama and helping to generate
millions of dollars for the state.
Alabama performed a stirring acappella chorus of “My Homes in
Alabama” for the legislators, government officials and others
in attendance. The band received a standing ovation.

The Spirit of Alabama medal
was designed by Robert C. Bonn of Montgomery. Mr. Bonn’s design
was selected through a contest open to the public. Varying designs
were submitted to the Governor and Mr. Bonn’s design was selected
by Governor Riley in May of 2003.
Representative Mike Hubbard of Auburn acted as the event master of
ceremonies. Also in attendance were members of the Alabama House of
Representatives, Senate and Supreme Court, as well as the Governor’s
Cabinet and the family and friends of this year’s awardees.
